🌿 What Is the Earthly Paradise in Cosmology?
In this model, the Earthly Paradise (Paradiso Terrestre) lies on top of the Mountain of Purgatory. The structure is imagined as follows:
1. The Earth Is the Center
- At the very bottom is Hell (Inferno).
- From the depths, Dante (or the soul in a general sense) rises through the levels of Purgatory, which is shaped like a mountain.
2. At the Top of the Mountain Lies the Earthly Paradise
- This place corresponds to the Garden of Eden, the garden where Adam and Eve originally lived.
- In this tradition, Eden is believed to still exist, but is inaccessible to humanity after the Fall.
- It is located above the clouds, separated from the ordinary earthly world.
3. Its Role in the Spiritual Journey
- The Earthly Paradise marks the final stage of purification: the soul is now free from sin.
- It is a transitional point between the human and the heavenly.
- In Dante’s story, this is where he meets Beatrice, who then guides him into the heavens.
🌈 Characteristics of the Earthly Paradise
- A world of perfect balance, without suffering, illness, or death.
- A realm of primordial harmony, where humans, nature, and God existed in complete unity.
- Symbolically, it represents the restored state of the soul—humanity as it was meant to be before the Fall.
Only after this do the heavens begin: the spheres of the Moon, Mercury, Venus, and so on.
In short:
The Earthly Paradise is the highest point that a human being can reach by purification alone —
➡️ the gateway to the heavens, which only divine grace can open.
